Visit to Highbury Hall, Home of Joseph Chamberlain

On Tuesday 29 November 2016, Dr Jonathan Boff and his Special Subject group visited the Moseley home, Highbury Hall, of the founder of University of Birmingham, Joseph Chamberlain. The module, taking a cue from one of Chamberlain’s speeches, is called ‘The ‘Weary Titan’: Britain, her Empire and the World, 1897-1919′ and explores Britain’s strategy and defence policy as she faced up to fresh competitors overseas and new pressures at home in the early years of the twentieth century.

At Highbury, students looked around the house and, in the Great Hall where Joe used to meet his constituents, enjoyed a joint seminar on ‘Chamberlain and the invention of modern politics’ with students from Newman University and their tutor, Dr Ian Cawood.
